Millions of individuals utilize weight loss and diabetes injections annually, with health authorities cautioning patients to be vigilant about a potential serious symptom affecting their eyesight.
The warning pertains to medications containing semaglutide such as Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) advises users who encounter sudden vision issues to promptly seek medical assistance.
The concern revolves around a rare eye disorder called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), which impacts the optic nerve and can result in sudden vision loss, potentially permanent in some instances.
Patients taking semaglutide are advised by the MHRA to promptly seek medical attention if they experience “sudden loss or rapid deterioration of eyesight.” Treatment should be halted if NAION is confirmed, as per the regulator.
NAION occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve diminishes, causing damage to the nerve tissue responsible for transmitting visual signals to the brain. Manchester Royal Eye Hospital describes the condition as a “small stroke” affecting the optic nerve, though it does not manifest typical stroke symptoms.
The hospital notes NAION as a common cause of sudden vision loss related to the optic nerve in individuals aged over 50. Risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, and smoking, according to their patient guidance.
Symptoms usually manifest suddenly and without pain, with patients often noticing blurred, cloudy, or missing areas in their vision, typically in one eye.
The MHRA’s alert follows an examination of evidence on the safety of semaglutide medications. Large epidemiological studies revealed that adults with type 2 diabetes using semaglutide faced approximately double the risk of NAION compared to non-users.
Despite the rarity of the condition, health officials stress that the side effect is classified as “very rare,” potentially affecting up to one in 10,000 individuals taking the medication.
Semaglutide, found in Wegovy for weight loss and in Ozempic and Rybelsus for treating type 2 diabetes, has seen a surge in prescriptions in recent years due to the increasing demand for weight management solutions.
The MHRA emphasizes that patients should not discontinue prescribed medication without consulting a healthcare professional, highlighting that the benefits of semaglutide outweigh the known risks when used as directed.
Research from the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) recognizes NAION as a primary cause of sudden vision loss in older adults, typically presenting as abrupt, painless vision loss in one eye, commonly noticed upon awakening.
Individuals taking semaglutide who experience sudden vision loss, blurred vision, or rapidly deteriorating eyesight are urged to seek immediate medical assessment. Early evaluation can aid in determining the cause of symptoms and the need for ongoing treatment.
