An inquest revealed that the cause of death of three sisters discovered off Brighton beach remains unknown, leaving their father enduring an overwhelming experience. Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, were retrieved from the water on May 13 but unfortunately could not be revived. Their father, Joseph Jacobsen, expressed profound grief over losing his beloved daughters. The coroner, Penelope Schofield, disclosed that the investigation is ongoing and no external involvement is suspected in their deaths. The identities of the women were confirmed by their father.
During the proceedings, the coroner empathetically acknowledged the father’s pain and urged to halt social media speculations by awaiting the police investigation outcomes. The inquest was adjourned until October 8 to consolidate the inquiries into all three deaths. Joseph previously paid tribute to his daughters, emphasizing the irreplaceable loss he feels.
The tragic loss of the sisters echoes a previous family sorrow as their mother, Janice Adetoro, passed away in 2010 due to drowning. Janice, 43, struggled with stress-related mental health issues and was found in a lake after disappearing from her home in Erdington.
The family members, hailing from Uxbridge, North West London, were reportedly unaware of the sisters’ trip to Brighton that morning. However, speculation arose that the visit might have been connected to their mother’s memory. The close-knit sisters were described by their aunt as inseparable, always staying connected despite moving out from their father’s house two years ago.
Sussex Police confirmed an ongoing investigation into how the sisters ended up in the water, pledging a thorough inquiry. The bodies were recovered near Brighton Marina after emergency services responded to a distress call at Brighton seafront in the early hours of May 13. Brighton Pavilion’s MP, Sian Berry, commended the community’s solidarity and compassion towards the tragedy, emphasizing the collective support despite the lack of knowledge about the sisters’ background.
