Accused Allegedly Coerced Victim Into Surrendering Benefits

In a recent court hearing at Bolton Crown Court, it was disclosed that a murder victim, Graham Cox, had expressed feeling intimidated by the accused, Ashley Crowder, who allegedly coerced him into surrendering his benefits. Crowder, 36, refuted the accusations of murdering Cox, who was discovered deceased in Crowder’s flat in March 2024. Prior to his demise, Cox had sought assistance at a support center, claiming that Crowder had confined him in the apartment for two weeks and physically assaulted him.

According to the prosecution, Cox managed to escape through a window and sought help at the UCAN center in Farnworth, where he mentioned being forced by Crowder to give up his benefits money. Crowder, residing in Farnworth, denied charges of murder, manslaughter, assault causing bodily harm, and four theft offenses.

A testimony presented in court included a video interview with Cox’s acquaintance, John Mahon, who expressed Cox’s fear of Crowder post-hospitalization. Mahon recounted instances where Crowder exhibited abusive behavior towards Cox, including verbal insults and physical violence. Mahon further claimed to have witnessed Crowder’s mistreatment of Cox on multiple occasions, emphasizing Cox’s palpable fear of Crowder.

During cross-examination by the defense counsel, Mahon admitted to having a prior friendship with both Crowder and Cox, often engaging in drug use together. However, he maintained his stance against Crowder when questioned by the authorities regarding the incidents involving Cox. Mahon reflected on the traumatic impact of Cox’s death during re-examination by the prosecutor.

The trial proceedings are ongoing as the court deliberates on the case.
