“Activists Demand Urgent Reform of Windrush Compensation”

After nearly nine years since the Windrush scandal came to light, activists have joined forces to call for an urgent revamp of the compensation system. Survivors, along with Grenfell United, Hillsborough Justice families, Imran Khan KC, Brian Eno, and various civil rights groups, have united to issue an open letter to the Lord Chancellor, Shabana Mahmood, urging the Government to significantly reform the Windrush Compensation Scheme.

Drawing inspiration from the successes of the Grenfell and Hillsborough campaigns, the group seeks similar backing for their cause. The letter emphasizes the contributions of the Windrush generation in rebuilding post-war Britain and condemns the injustices they faced under the Hostile Environment policy.

Despite the launch of the Windrush Compensation Scheme seven years ago, it continues to fall short, as highlighted by recent findings from JUSTICE with the University of Sussex and Dechert LLP. The evidence reveals significant disparities in compensation amounts, with applicants often being initially denied or offered inadequate sums until they receive legal assistance.

The group’s demands include transferring the Windrush Compensation Scheme from the Home Office to an independent body overseen by a judge or independent commissioner, providing non-means-tested legal aid to all claimants at every stage, and adopting a more compassionate approach to evidence requirements.

The joint statement issued by the signatories underscores the pain of state betrayal experienced by their communities and the need for justice and reparations. The proposed changes offer hope for individuals like Carlton, a victim of the Windrush scandal, who has faced challenges in reclaiming his British identity and right to reside in the UK after being wrongly caught in the immigration turmoil.

Deborah Trotman, speaking on behalf of her brother Carlton, highlighted the emotional toll and obstacles faced by victims navigating the compensation process, particularly those with special needs. She stressed the importance of legal support in ensuring fair outcomes and addressing the trauma inflicted on individuals and families affected by the Windrush scandal.

The ongoing struggle for justice and accountability in cases like Carlton’s serves as a stark reminder of the need for systemic reforms and compassionate handling of historical injustices.
