A woman has been convicted of killing her young son by administering a deadly mix of prescription drugs before he was to be taken into state custody. Emma Barnett, residing in Debden, Essex, went into hiding after a court ruling on November 8, 2024, that decided her 14-month-old son Oakley should be removed from her care.
During the trial at Cambridge Crown Court, Judge Mr. Justice Derek Sweeting informed the jury that the 36-year-old mother left her car at Epping Forest and returned home on foot. Essex Police reported that Barnett and Oakley were initially reported missing, leading authorities to search for them in Epping Forest. However, they were eventually found in Barnett’s loft after police entered her residence.
The prosecution revealed that Barnett had prepared a bottle mixed with milk and medication, which she fed to Oakley, resulting in his demise. Following the trial, Barnett was found guilty of murder.
Conversations between officers and Barnett, who was hiding in the loft, unveiled her confession that she had killed her son. The court heard that Barnett attempted to take her own life in the presence of the police after admitting to her actions.
Judge Sweeting pointed out that social workers were in the process of safeguarding Oakley as per the court ruling, leading to the tragic outcome. Barnett’s defense argued that Oakley’s death was accidental, claiming she did not intend to harm him. However, evidence found in the loft indicated the presence of substances that, when combined, could have led to respiratory issues.
The judge stated that Barnett’s actions were deliberate, with the intention to end her son’s life. The Crown Prosecutor emphasized that Barnett knowingly gave her son a lethal mixture of medications.
Detective Inspector James Holmes of Essex Police expressed sympathy for Oakley and his loved ones, acknowledging the emotional toll of the investigation. Barnett is set to be sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court on June 5.
