Nearly 200 vessels set sail in western Prince Edward Island on the weekend for a lobster fishing competition in memory of a local teenager who lost his life in a boating incident in 2020.
The Hutch Memorial Cup, held in LFA-25, witnessed a record turnout of boats as fishers gathered for the annual lobster fishing tournament dedicated to honoring Alex Hutchinson’s legacy.
Alex’s father, Darren Hutchinson, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, emphasizing Alex’s passion for fishing and his dream of owning fishing gear. The event holds special significance following the tragic loss of Alex and his friend Ethan Reilly, aged 17, in a boating accident in Cascumpec Bay last year.
Established in the wake of their passing, the A&E Legacy Foundation aims to raise funds for youth sports programs in western P.E.I. The foundation organizes the Hutch Memorial Cup, where local fishermen compete to catch the largest lobster, with prizes awarded for various categories.
Darren Hutchinson was pleased with the community’s unwavering support for the fundraising event, highlighting the positive impact it has had. Fishermen paid a fee to participate in the competition, with expectations of raising approximately $15,000 for local sports initiatives from the 195 boats engaged in the event.
Joey Dumville, co-chair of the A&E Legacy Foundation, projected a successful fundraising outcome from the event. He noted the increasing participation each year and the community’s generosity in supporting the cause.
The event drew nearly all fishing boats in the area, with approximately 200 vessels operating out of LFA-25. The foundation also hosts additional fundraising activities throughout the year, including an ATV rally in memory of Ethan.
Participants like Chandler Wood, who grew up alongside Alex and Ethan, shared heartfelt sentiments about their friends’ lasting impact. Wood, reflecting on Alex’s love for fishing and the significance of the competition, emphasized the enduring memory and legacy of the two teenagers.
