“16 Individuals Rescued Floating in Pacific Near Baja California”

At least 16 individuals were spotted floating in the Pacific Ocean near Mexico’s Baja California coastline and were successfully rescued in the early hours of Friday. The U.S. Coast Guard official, Petty Officer Chris Sappey, reported that the sighting occurred around 1 a.m. PT, approximately 225 kilometers west of Ensenada. The reason for the individuals being in the water remains unclear, as no vessel has been located. One rescued person mentioned that up to 27 individuals were aboard a missing boat, but further details about their activities were not provided.

Sappey noted the absence of any visible vessel in the water, only people floating. The rescued individuals are being transported to hospitals in San Diego. The U.S. Coast Guard is collaborating with Mexican authorities in the search operation, utilizing a helicopter, a fixed-airwing plane, and a cutter.

Migrants are increasingly opting for perilous sea routes facilitated by smugglers to evade heavily guarded land borders, such as those along the California coast. Panga boats depart from Mexico under the cover of darkness, traveling hundreds of kilometers northward. Over the years, there have been multiple incidents of migrant vessels capsizing on their journey to California.

In a tragic event in May 2025, three individuals lost their lives when a panga boat overturned off the coast, approximately 56 kilometers north of the U.S.-Mexico border. Similarly, in 2023, eight individuals perished when two boats engaged in migrant smuggling approached a San Diego beach amidst dense fog, leading to a fatal capsizing. This incident marked one of the deadliest maritime smuggling episodes along the U.S. coast.

In a separate incident, a San Diego man was sentenced to 18 years in prison in 2022 for operating an overloaded vessel carrying 32 migrants that broke apart in strong surf off the coast, resulting in three fatalities and more than two dozen injuries.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has advised residents along the Pacific coast to remain indoors as Hurricane Simon, a powerful Category 4 storm, heads towards the region, posing threats of destructive winds and storm surges.
