15-Tonne Concrete Slabs Plunge Onto Australian Motorway

Two individuals narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation when heavy concrete slabs, totaling 15 tonnes, fell from a truck onto a busy motorway. The shocking incident occurred on the North-South Motorway in southern Australia as the truck merged into a different lane. The weight of the cargo shifted, causing the massive concrete segments to plummet onto the roadway, striking several vehicles and nearly hitting bystanders.

Upon impact, the 15-tonne load collided with three parked cars on the motorway’s shoulder, where pedestrians had been present. The scene was enveloped in dust as the concrete blocks crashed down onto the pavement. Emergency services rushed to the scene, transporting one pedestrian to the hospital with a suspected broken arm. Fortunately, despite the chaos, only minor injuries were reported, leaving authorities astounded that no fatalities occurred.

Vicas Mataru, a father-of-two who was assisting a stranded colleague when the slabs fell, described the experience as miraculous. He recounted the terrifying moment of impact, emphasizing that quick thinking and luck played a significant role in their survival. Mataru noted that a yellow car shielded him from the worst of the debris, diverting the concrete slabs away from his location.

Following the incident, the truck driver approached Mataru to express remorse, attributing the accident to sudden braking caused by another vehicle cutting in front of him. The truck had been transporting concrete segments for the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) motorway project.

In response to the crash, authorities suspended the transportation of concrete segments as a precautionary measure while investigations are ongoing. The damaged vehicles were cleared from the site, and a crane was brought in to remove the heavy concrete slabs. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the cause of the incident and prevent similar accidents in the future.
