A group of 11 European tourists on a speedboat has gone missing in Indonesia, a popular holiday destination. The boat was reported missing after departing from Tojo Unauna regency in Central Sulawesi province en route to Marisa Port in Gorontalo province but failing to arrive as scheduled.
The incident was alerted by a local tour guide to the search and rescue office, prompting an immediate search operation. However, as of now, there have been no signs of the missing vessel or its passengers.
Rescuers are facing challenging sea conditions with high waves up to 2.5 meters due to strong winds. The tourists on board included individuals from Czech Republic, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, and France, along with two Indonesian crew members.
Multiple search and rescue teams are scouring around 300 square nautical miles of waters in the Tomini Bay area, utilizing thermal-imaging drones and diving equipment in the search efforts. Indonesia, known for its vast archipelago and reliance on boats for transport, often witnesses boat accidents due to safety concerns and unpredictable weather.
Notably, in a recent incident on July 15, a boat carrying 76 passengers sank off Selayar Island, resulting in casualties and missing persons. The embassies representing the missing tourists have not provided any immediate comments on the situation.
