A tragic incident occurred during cosmetic surgery as a mother lost her life, having invested her family’s entire savings in the procedure. Sara Milena EcheverrÃa Alcendra, aged 31, underwent preparations for liposuction and breast augmentation for approximately five months after shedding 4st 8lbs to meet the criteria for the surgery. Unfortunately, she experienced a fatal medical emergency shortly after entering the operating room at a cosmetic clinic in Colombia.
Carlos Hernández, Sara’s grieving husband, is seeking answers, asserting that his wife was in good health and had passed all pre-operative medical assessments. Authorities in Barranquilla have initiated an investigation into her untimely death to determine whether it resulted from an unforeseen medical complication or potential medical negligence.
The couple had diligently saved over the years to cover the expenses of the operation, which amounted to more than £15,000 (65.3 million Colombian pesos). Sara, a shopkeeper who worked alongside her husband, had originally weighed around 15st 7lbs before being advised by her surgeon to shed weight prior to undergoing cosmetic procedures. Following a rigorous five-month regimen involving a nutritionist, diet, and exercise, she successfully lost 4st 8lbs.
Despite undergoing extensive pre-surgical evaluations and receiving treatment to boost her haemoglobin levels, Sara tragically passed away during the surgery scheduled at the Diamanti Aesthetic Clinic in Barranquilla.
Mr Hernández disclosed that they arrived at the clinic early in the morning, and Sara was taken into the theatre around 11am. The operation was projected to last about seven hours; however, devastating news arrived just over two hours into the procedure.
Expressing his anguish, Mr Hernández emphasized the need for transparency regarding his wife’s condition, emphasizing her good health prior to the surgery. He mentioned the challenges in comprehending the explanations provided by medical personnel amidst his profound grief.
Sara’s father, Roicer EcheverrÃa, also raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s demise, questioning conflicting information received regarding the timing of the procedure and her sudden deterioration.
The family’s total bill escalated beyond the initial estimate due to additional charges for supplementary treatments like hernia repair, a post-operative pain pump, and medical insurance. Despite selecting a reputed, licensed clinic for the surgery, the family is now urging investigators to probe into potential errors during the operation.
Following Sara’s passing, the clinic shared documents on social media showcasing permits issued by Colombia’s health authorities for conducting cosmetic surgeries. However, no official statement elucidating the specifics of her demise has been released.
Sara is survived by her husband and their two children, aged 12 and eight. Her body has been transferred to forensic specialists for further examination, with prosecutors delving into the exact cause of her death and any potential legal or professional responsibilities involved.
