“Wolf Euthanized After Rare Attack in Saskatchewan”

Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Community Safety has announced the euthanization of a wolf following a rare attack in the province last week. The incident occurred on October 17 when a person was assaulted by a wolf in a remote northern area near Highway 914.

The victim, identified as a contractor for Cameco, a prominent uranium mining company, sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the off-site attack. After receiving medical treatment at Cameco’s Key Lake mill site, the individual is reported to be in stable condition.

The Ministry’s wildlife human attack response team (WHART) is actively investigating the incident. Traps were set in the vicinity of the attack, leading to the capture of the suspected wolf on Tuesday. The animal was subsequently euthanized and sent for a necropsy at Prairie Diagnostic Services in Saskatoon.

Although wolves are common in Saskatchewan’s forested regions, interactions with humans are infrequent, as stated by the Ministry. The government advises individuals in wolf-populated areas to refrain from attracting wildlife with food or garbage, maintain situational awareness, and avoid approaching or feeding wolves.

In the event of a wolf encounter, people are advised not to run or turn their backs on the animal. Instead, they should face the wolf, appear large, slowly retreat, and give the animal space to depart the area safely. Any encounters with aggressive or unusual wolf behavior should be promptly reported to the province by calling 1-800-667-7561.
