Stephen Eustaquio swiftly agreed to join Swansea City when the opportunity arose. Following his contribution to Canada’s advancement to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time, the midfielder was enticed by the prospect of aiding the Welsh club in their quest to return to the Premier League and reuniting with a familiar coach.
Swansea City officially revealed the signing of the 29-year-old from Porto, securing him on a two-year deal with the potential for an additional season. Eustaquio emphasized the significance of collaborating with head coach Vitor Matos, who had previous ties to Porto, as a key factor in his decision-making process.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Eustaquio stated, “It was an obvious choice for me. I am confident in what I can achieve here, so I am delighted with my decision.” Despite finishing 11th in the Championship last season, Swansea faces a challenging journey back to the Premier League.
Eustaquio acknowledged the difficulty of Swansea’s objective, noting, “The aspiration of contributing to a prominent club aiming for top-flight football was a major draw for me. While the path ahead is daunting, taking it one game at a time could foster a special atmosphere in the stadium and potentially lead to a remarkable season.”
Originally from Leamington, Ontario, with Portuguese heritage, Eustaquio relocated to Portugal during his childhood. Prior to his tenure at Porto, he played for Chaves in Portugal and Cruz Azul in Mexico. With over 150 appearances during his four-and-a-half years at Porto, he also had a brief loan spell at Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC earlier this year.
Eustaquio boasts 61 international caps for Canada and has represented the nation at the last two World Cups. Noteworthy was his decisive goal in stoppage time during Canada’s 1-0 triumph over South Africa in the Round of 32 at this summer’s tournament, where Canada was eventually eliminated by Morocco in the co-hosted event.
Reflecting on his World Cup experience, Eustaquio expressed, “This summer was exceptional. Achieving significant milestones as a nation in such a prestigious tournament was a dream realized for us. Contributing with the winning goal against South Africa was a particularly joyous moment.”
Assigned jersey number 46 at Swansea, Eustaquio is poised to potentially make his debut in the upcoming match against Derby County this weekend.
