University of Waterloo doctoral candidate, Kaveeshan Thurairajah, recently achieved recognition by receiving an Ig Nobel Prize, a lighthearted counterpart to the prestigious Nobel Prizes. The Ig Nobels highlight unconventional and imaginative research endeavors within academia. Thurairajah and his team were granted the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on creating a splash-free urinal.
Upon learning of their win, Thurairajah reflected on the moment his supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, shared the news. The team’s innovative urinal prototypes, including the Nautilus and Cornocopia designs, were tested to identify the most effective and easy-to-clean model. Thurairajah emphasized the practical benefits of the Nautilus design in reducing splashing and simplifying maintenance.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues sported bright yellow raincoats, prepared for accolades from their fellow unconventional scientists. Despite the humor surrounding their research, Thurairajah emphasized the societal value of improving public restroom facilities for a more inviting environment.
Additionally, Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto and McGill University were also honored at the ceremony for studies on unethical behavior and innovative use of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing, respectively. The event, hosted by the magazine Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. due to visa concerns, allowing a more inclusive participation from the global scientific community.
Thurairajah expressed support for the decision, underlining the importance of international collaboration in advancing scientific knowledge. The multidisciplinary Ig Nobel Prizes celebrate quirky research efforts aimed at expanding the boundaries of conventional science, fostering a spirit of curiosity and innovation within the scientific community.
