“Visit Detroit Halts Marketing to Canada Amid Strained Relations”

Detroit’s tourism bureau has decided to halt its marketing efforts targeted at Canada due to strained relations caused by what they describe as “antagonistic” actions by the United States. Historically, Visit Detroit allocated a significant portion of its budget, around 10 percent, to attract Canadian visitors to the city.

President & CEO of Visit Detroit, Claude Molinari, stated that they are eager to welcome Canadians back once tensions ease between the two countries. Molinari acknowledged the negative impact of US government policies on relations with Canada, leading to a 30 percent decline in Canadian visitors over the past two years, with a recent seven percent increase.

Molinari emphasized the importance of resolving issues such as tariffs and fostering a more respectful relationship between Ottawa and Washington before resuming marketing efforts in Canada. The ongoing tariff disputes initiated by US President Donald Trump have significantly affected industries, particularly Windsor’s automotive sector.

Meanwhile, Visit Detroit has redirected its marketing budget previously aimed at Canada towards attracting European visitors to the city. Molinari expressed optimism for a future where Canadian visitors return to Detroit, rebuilding the historic bond between the two nations.

In a separate development, despite the strained relations, the Toledo Zoo in Ohio is hosting its annual Canadian member appreciation day, offering perks to over 100 Canadian members who have continued to support the zoo during these challenging times. Tana Benford, Vice President of Development and Membership at the Toledo Zoo, highlighted the zoo’s focus on animals and conservation, extending a warm welcome to all visitors.

The Canadian appreciation event in Toledo was initiated post-COVID to thank members who maintained their memberships despite border restrictions. Molinari expressed gratitude towards Canadians for their loyalty and friendship, hoping for a renewed connection between Detroit and its Canadian visitors in the future.
