ICC Receives Sakharov Prize for Upholding Justice

The International Criminal Court (ICC) based in The Hague has been honored with the prestigious Sakharov Prize by the European Union. The award, announced by the European Parliament, recognizes the ICC’s significant efforts in upholding international law and justice. The ICC, established under the Rome Statute, is responsible for investigating and prosecuting individuals accused of serious violations of international law, such as genocide and crimes against humanity.

Despite being a non-party to the Rome Statute, the ICC can investigate crimes committed in countries that are state parties. In 2020, the ICC initiated an investigation into alleged crimes involving U.S. personnel in Afghanistan. The ICC has faced criticism and pressure from the U.S. administration, with President Donald Trump imposing multiple rounds of sanctions on the court and some of its judges. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the sanctions were intended to hinder the court’s operations, emphasizing that the U.S. and its citizens are not under the jurisdiction of the ICC.

In a separate incident, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant in 2024 for alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes in Gaza. Israel has refuted these allegations. The ICC condemned the U.S. sanctions as an attempt to obstruct justice and undermine the rule of law, while asserting its commitment to its mandate.

The Sakharov Prize, bestowed by the European Parliament, holds particular significance for the ICC and its affiliates, especially amid current challenges. The ICC welcomed the award, highlighting the importance of independent judicial institutions and those dedicated to upholding international law. Named after Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, the prize is an annual recognition of groups or individuals advocating for human rights and freedom of thought.
