UN Urges Release of Palestinian Doctor Detained by Israel

A recent United Nations investigation has expressed concern over the reported mistreatment of a well-known Palestinian doctor, Hussam Abu Safiya, who was taken into Israeli custody in Gaza in December 2024 and remains detained in Israel. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, along with East Jerusalem, has called for the immediate release of Abu Safiya, who serves as the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza.

Various rights groups and Abu Safiya’s legal representative have raised alarms about his precarious health situation and his continuous detention without formal charges, as noted by Physicians for Human Rights Israel, an Israeli human rights organization. The UN inquiry highlighted the actions of Israeli Prison Service guards towards Palestinian detainees, raising concerns about potential violations of international law amounting to international crimes, with Abu Safiya’s health reportedly deteriorating due to these actions.

In response, a spokesperson for the Israel Prison Service dismissed the allegations as false and baseless, denying mistreatment of Abu Safiya and other healthcare professionals in prison. The UN inquiry emphasized that the treatment of Abu Safiya by Israeli authorities is part of a broader pattern of violations previously identified in their reports.

Separately, a UN rights body has labeled Israel’s detention of Abu Safiya as arbitrary and demanded his immediate release, citing violations of multiple articles within the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Meanwhile, Israeli military actions in Gaza led to the deaths of at least nine Palestinians, including two children, in recent airstrikes and shootings, according to health officials.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza since the ceasefire reached last October has resulted in a significant number of casualties on both sides, with accusations of ceasefire violations from both parties and international scrutiny on the humanitarian crisis in the region.
