Gaza Conflict Escalates: Palestinians Fear Displacement

On the Gaza coast, resembling a leisure spot rather than a war zone, Palestinians enjoy the sun amid a prolonged conflict now in its third year. Despite discussions about peace negotiations and withdrawals, few harbor illusions that the strife has come to an end.

“This conflict has made me wary of hope,” expressed Tamer Al-Sheikh. “We’ve clung to hope through multiple ceasefires, but the battle persists.”

Israeli airstrikes continue to strike Gaza almost daily, targeting alleged Hamas militants. Simultaneously, Israeli forces have been steadily advancing westward, encroaching on the territory and squeezing two million Palestinians into a shrinking area, compelling a struggle for survival towards the Mediterranean Sea.

According to the Gaza peace deal from last October, Israel acknowledged a commitment to withdraw its forces to the “yellow line,” marking the limit of Israeli military authority within Gaza. However, Israel now controls more than 60% of the area, surpassing the agreed-upon boundary, citing the need for “operational security.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the military to push their control further to 70%. Rejecting a U.S. proposal to gradually remove Israeli and Hamas control over Gaza, Netanyahu emphasized that Israel will not withdraw until Hamas disarms. This impasse persists, with Hamas only willing to relinquish arms concurrently with Israeli retreat.

Through satellite images and on-ground accounts, CBC’s visual investigations team has verified the ongoing advancement of Israeli troops and the expansion of the yellow line. The relentless shifting of the yellow markers overnight has forced Palestinians to relocate multiple times, with Israeli forces closely trailing these movements.

The impact on Gaza’s civilians has been severe, with over 1,200 Palestinians killed since the ceasefire began last autumn. The total death toll among Gazans since the conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, has surpassed 70,000, as reported by Gaza authorities and acknowledged by Israel.

Israel justifies its yellow line adjustments as defensive measures in line with the ceasefire agreement, aimed at reducing friction and securing both troops and nearby communities. Notably, the construction of a 23-kilometer berm along or behind the yellow line and the establishment of fortified compounds resembling permanent military bases signify Israel’s fortified presence in Gaza.

Furthermore, the systematic destruction of Gaza neighborhoods post-ceasefire, demonstrated through satellite imagery, has raised concerns. UN experts have criticized Israel for demolishing residential buildings as part of reshaping the occupied Gaza territory. Palestinians affected by these actions believe Israel’s motive is to coerce them into leaving Gaza by making their lives unbearable.

While the Israeli government denies intentions to expel Palestinians or annex Gaza officially, there are mounting pressures from political factions advocating for such actions. Extremist settler groups and government officials have rallied for the settlement and annexation of Gaza, challenging the fragile status quo.

As tensions escalate and political rhetoric intensifies, the people of Gaza remain apprehensive about their future, fearing they are being gradually displaced towards the sea by the shifting yellow line and encroaching forces.
