Ukraine has carried out significant attacks on key facilities in Russia, resulting in injuries and major damage to logistical centers. The strikes, directed at warehouses owned by the online retail giant Wildberries in Krasnodar and Nevinnomyssk, are estimated to have caused over £1 billion in losses and left fifteen individuals wounded. This action followed the dismissal of General Oleksandr Syrskyi as Commander-in-Chief by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, appointing Major-General Mykhailo Drapatyi in his place.
The assaults represent a setback for Vladimir Putin’s already struggling economy as calls for peace talks intensify. Additional strikes on Wildberries sites in Elektrostal and the Tambov region over the weekend resulted in further damages totaling £1.5 billion, with the Elektrostal center severely affected. Ukraine has accused the Putin-linked retailer of supporting the Russian military machine, as the company is owned by Tatyana Kim, Russia’s wealthiest woman with a fortune of £6.1 billion.
In response to the attacks, Kim expressed deep emotions and emphasized the importance of continuing their work for the benefit of people. The strikes caused injuries in both Krasnodar and Nevinnomyssk, with firefighting efforts underway to address the significant fires in these areas. Notably, a major oil depot in Armavir was also targeted, resulting in a blaze and one casualty, aiming to exacerbate oil shortages in Russia.
Furthermore, Ukrainian strikes on power plants in Crimea led to blackouts, coinciding with Ukraine gaining ground in the conflict against Russia. The change in leadership within the Ukrainian military signals a shift towards embracing drone warfare and technological advancements. The outgoing General Syrskyi, known as ‘The Butcher,’ highlighted his military achievements, while his successor, Drapatyi, advocates for leveraging advanced drone and missile capabilities for defense.
The public pressure that prompted these changes could lead to further demands, including the potential reinstatement of former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. In retaliation, Russia targeted a logistics center in Odesa and the city’s port, following previous strikes on Nova Poshta facilities. The escalating conflict underscores the ongoing tensions and strategic maneuvers between the two nations.
