Parts of the United Kingdom are bracing for intense heat reaching up to 34C, surpassing temperatures in popular tourist spots like Santorini and Barcelona. Southern England will experience a surge of “hot and very humid air” on Monday, with temperatures quickly climbing into the mid-30s. This has led to the issuance of yellow and amber heat health warnings for England by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
According to meteorologist Tom Morgan from the Met Office, England and Wales will bask in abundant sunshine, propelling temperatures to potentially approach the mid-30s, especially in the southeast. Tuesday is expected to bring tropical nights in the south, with temperatures staying above 20 in certain areas.
While Northern Ireland and Scotland may see some rain on Monday, England and Wales are forecasted to remain dry with clear skies, resulting in a warm and uncomfortable night compared to previous ones. Tomorrow, destinations like Barcelona and Santorini will experience lower temperatures than southern England, peaking at 30C and 26C respectively.
The East Midlands, East of England, London, and South East of England will be under an amber heat health warning from 9 am tomorrow until 9 am on Wednesday. This indicates potential significant impacts on health and social care services due to the high temperatures. Conversely, the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, West Midlands, and South West are under a yellow heat health warning for the same period, signaling possible impacts on health and social care services.
The Met Office’s Monday forecast includes rain in Scotland, scattered showers in Northern Ireland and western regions, while most of England and Wales will enjoy hot sunshine with humid conditions. Earlier this week, the Government declared that half of England is currently facing drought conditions, with specific areas under stress including East Anglia, Hertfordshire, London, Thames Valley, Hampshire & the Isle of Wight, Devon & Cornwall, the West Midlands, Wessex, as well as the entirety of Wales.
