A recent tragic incident in the UK involved the murder of a newly married Indian woman by her husband, despite her family’s efforts to seek help from the authorities. Harshita Brella, 24, was strangled at her residence just eight months into her marriage to Pankaj Lamba. She had reached out to the police for assistance, reporting instances of abuse by her husband.
Following the incident, four police officers are now under investigation for their handling of the domestic abuse allegations. Harshita’s sister, Sonia Dabas, expressed regret over the situation, stating that they had urged Harshita to return to India for safety, but the police advised against leaving due to the ongoing case.
Tragically, Harshita was found dead in November 2024, days after Lamba had fled to India. Lamba, who has been charged with murder, rape, sexual assault, and coercive behavior, was captured on CCTV in various locations. The authorities are actively searching for him, and Northamptonshire Police is set to meet with Harshita’s family to discuss the case.
Harshita’s father, Satbir Singh Brella, revealed that his daughter appeared distressed after being placed in a women’s refuge following the police intervention. He expressed frustration that Harshita believed she could not leave the country despite their willingness to bring her back to India immediately.
In response to the case, Northamptonshire Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct for review of its prior interactions with Harshita. The police spokesperson confirmed ongoing cooperation with the IOPC concerning the circumstances leading to Harshita’s tragic death.
