More than 100 UK-based millionaires, including Gary Lineker, have united to urge new Prime Minister Andy Burnham to implement a wealth tax. The Patriotic Millionaires group orchestrated a letter to the Labour leader, emphasizing the importance of taxing the wealthiest individuals who derive their income from assets rather than traditional work.
Prominent figures like former England striker Gary Lineker, ex-chairman of Greggs Ian Gregg, and renowned filmmaker Richard Curtis have signed the letter. The list of signatories also includes Scottish author Val McDermid, former City trader Gary Stevenson, and climate expert Michael Berners-Lee.
Gary Lineker, in support of the initiative, highlighted the necessity for the country to strive for greater equality and emphasized that paying a fair share of taxes aligns with fundamental British values. The proposal suggests a 2% tax on assets exceeding £10 million, estimated to generate £24 billion for the Treasury.
