A man from the UK tragically passed away in the wildfires in Spain while communicating with his wife as he attempted to rescue their pets. Penelope Howe shared that her friend’s spouse lost his life when his car was consumed by flames during the evacuation of the Los Gallardos area in Almeria province. Howe mentioned that her friend was in a state of shock as she spoke to her husband on the phone while he was trapped in the car with their cats, moments before the devastating incident unfolded.
The heartbreaking incident occurred amidst ongoing search efforts by emergency services in the rugged terrain. The wildfires in the southeastern region of Spain claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals, with 23 others still unaccounted for. Among the deceased, four are believed to be British nationals, as their bodies were discovered in a burned-out vehicle.
Furthermore, Spanish authorities disclosed that a British couple was rescued from a ravine in Almeria after being caught in the rapidly spreading fires while out hiking. The couple was found in critical condition with severe burns and is currently receiving intensive care treatment. The rescue operation involved significant manpower, with over 150 firefighters and 220 soldiers battling the blaze that led to the evacuation of over 1,400 people.
Additionally, police efforts are underway to identify the deceased individuals, as post-mortem examinations on the charred bodies have so far been inconclusive. DNA samples have been sent to Madrid for analysis to determine the identities of the victims, with speculations that some may include minors. The aftermath of the wildfires revealed haunting images of burnt vehicles in a convoy where the British nationals were believed to have perished.
Authorities anticipate that most of the identified victims will be foreigners, likely British and Belgians. The tragic event has sparked controversy, with a Belgian virologist disputing claims that victims failed to follow evacuation instructions. The virologist, Thomas-Wolf Verdonckt, asserted that his father, who perished in the fires, had not received any warning or instructions to shelter in place.
The wildfires in Spain have been exacerbated by a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 40C across Southern Europe. The environmental conditions have fueled multiple fires in the region, leading to widespread devastation and loss of life.
