UK Faces Record Heatwave: Temperatures Could Hit 42C

Britain is bracing for potentially record-breaking temperatures this week, with forecasts indicating that the mercury could soar up to 42C, surpassing the current all-time high of 40.3C set during the scorching July 2022 heatwave. The Met Office has issued rare amber and red weather warnings across England and Wales, anticipating temperatures of up to 40C on Wednesday and Thursday. Health alerts have been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) due to the severe impacts expected from the intense heat.

The UKV weather model projects highs of 40C in the south-west of England on Wednesday, with temperatures in the high 30s across southern, central, and eastern regions. Thursday could see even hotter conditions, with the possibility of hitting 42C in the north-west, eastern England, South Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, potentially setting a new temperature record.

Data suggests that temperatures exceeding 40C could be widespread in central England, northern areas, and the south-west, with approximately 24 counties likely to reach the 40C mark. The Met Office warns of extremely humid conditions accompanying this heatwave, with dew points expected to reach around 22C, significantly higher than during the previous record-breaking heatwave.

Expectations include widespread ‘Tropical Nights’ with temperatures unlikely to fall below 20C overnight, particularly in urban areas of southern England. Daytime temperatures are projected to peak at 37C today and could climb to 40C on Wednesday and Thursday. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Mark Sidaway emphasized the severity of the impending heatwave, noting the potential health impacts due to the combination of high temperatures and humidity, leading to prolonged heat stress.
