A passenger plane was compelled to land unexpectedly in the United Kingdom after declaring an in-flight emergency. The American Airlines flight encountered issues over the North Sea, diverting from its intended path to land in Britain.
Departing Zurich Airport at 11:54 am yesterday, American Airlines flight AA93 was en route to Philadelphia International Airport. Shortly after takeoff, the crew signaled a problem onboard.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, with a usual capacity of 234 passengers, took off smoothly from Zurich, climbed to its cruising altitude of 36,000 feet, and headed northwest across German airspace. However, about one hour and 15 minutes into the eight-hour flight, between Belgium and the eastern coast of the UK, things went awry.
The crew urgently notified air traffic control of an unspecified onboard emergency by transmitting a “Squawk 7700” emergency code. Flight tracking data indicated the Dreamliner veered from its transatlantic route, initiating a rapid descent over the UK.
Air traffic controllers prioritized the aircraft, coordinating with pilots for a diversion to London Heathrow Airport. The flight successfully landed at London Heathrow at 12:30 pm before departing for Philadelphia at 1:55 pm.
American Airlines confirmed to the Mirror that the unscheduled landing was due to a medical emergency involving a passenger.
In a separate incident, an American Airlines pilot had to make a distressing call to air traffic controllers before landing on Sunday, as a man allegedly bit another passenger on board while landing in Philadelphia. The passenger became uncontrollable, attempting to engage in altercations with fellow passengers.
Audio from the pilot’s call captured him stating, “I don’t know if he’s hallucinating or whatever, but he just bit a passenger, and he’s trying to fight everybody.” The pilot then requested emergency medical assistance and law enforcement, ending the call with a remark, “what a day, huh?”
