Britons can expect scorching conditions on Wednesday, with temperatures forecasted to soar up to 35C. The Met Office predicts this day to be the hottest of the week, leading to the issuance of amber heat health alerts for regions including the East Midlands, East of England, London, and Southeast of England. Yellow heat health alerts are also in effect for the South West, West Midlands, and Yorkshire & The Humber.
The sweltering heat is expected to persist throughout the week, potentially meeting the heatwave threshold across most UK regions. Areas like Berkshire, Surrey, and Buckinghamshire are likely to experience the highest temperatures on Wednesday, surpassing the previous peak of 28C recorded at Heathrow Airport in west London on Monday.
While the rising temperatures bring discomfort, they also elevate the risk of wildfires, a concern that has been a reality in the UK and Europe. Hundreds of thousands of individuals have been evacuated from fire-affected areas in France, prompting President Emmanuel Macron to liken the situation to the country’s struggles during the Second World War.
In Scotland, firefighters battled a fierce wildfire in the Cairngorms for an extended period, forcing families to evacuate. Although Scotland is not expected to face extreme heat like parts of England and Wales, southern regions may see showers on Wednesday. By Thursday, temperatures are anticipated to ease in most parts of the UK, except for the Southeast of England where the mercury is predicted to linger around 29C, matching the heatwave threshold.
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Gregory Wolverson noted that while the heatwave will be brief, temperatures will rise rapidly, especially in the southeast. Some areas could see temperatures in the mid-30Cs by Wednesday. As the week progresses, weather conditions will become more changeable, transitioning to cooler, unsettled patterns with a mix of sunshine and showers. Northern regions may experience heavier showers with a slight risk of isolated thunderstorms.
Counties like Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, Hampshire, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey, and West Sussex are expected to be particularly affected by the heatwave conditions.
