U.S. President Donald Trump has recently approved an executive order that temporarily suspends a broad set of new sanctions aimed at the Russian economy, citing national interest as the reason for the pause. The order, named after the late South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham and signed by Trump last month, was intended to hasten restrictions on financial support fueling the conflict in Ukraine.
This decision follows Trump’s earlier statement that the U.S. had agreed to purchase diesel fuel from Russia to help lower global energy prices, despite potential repercussions on Ukraine. A survey by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicated that Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the situation with Iran and attribute rising prices to his administration. This disapproval has led to a decline in Trump’s approval ratings, raising pressure as Republicans aim to maintain control of Congress in the upcoming November 3 elections.
Senator Lindsey Graham, who passed away in July, had been a strong advocate for stricter sanctions against Russia to compel an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Following bipartisan support from Congress after Graham’s death, Trump initially endorsed the legislation but reversed his stance on Friday, without immediately clarifying the national interest rationale for pausing the sanctions.
The decision was communicated via the White House website late in the evening, noting that a report explaining the action had been submitted to Congress. Trump’s shift in policy coincided with his recent criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for failing to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin to resolve the conflict.
Furthermore, Trump’s recent announcement of an agreement with Putin for diesel supply from Russia has drawn criticism from both Republicans and Democrats. They argue that this agreement could potentially aid Russia in its conflict with Ukraine while having little impact on global fuel prices, largely influenced by Trump’s policies regarding Iran.
The now-suspended sanctions were a focal point of Senator Darline Graham, Lindsey Graham’s sister who was appointed to complete his term and is also running to succeed him in the Senate. In a recent debate with Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, Senator Graham, endorsed by Trump, emphasized the purpose of the sanctions as a tool to potentially end the conflict through economic pressure, leaving the decision to implement them or pursue alternative strategies to the president.
