Former US President Donald Trump expressed his condolences following the passing of Victor Willis, the lead singer of the iconic band Village People. Willis, known for his performance of the hit song YMCA, succumbed to a brief but aggressive illness, as confirmed by the band’s official social media page.
Trump hailed Willis as a “great and happy guy” who played a pivotal role in the resurgence of YMCA, labeling it a “monster hit” once again three decades after its initial release following a performance at one of his rallies. The former president shared a heartfelt message on Truth Social, reminiscing about their collaboration and the impact of YMCA on his events.
Village People also issued a statement mourning the loss of Willis, emphasizing the singer’s contribution to the band’s success. Despite disagreements in the past over the use of YMCA at Trump’s rallies, the group and the late singer remained connected through their music.
In addition to YMCA, Village People achieved international fame with other disco and dance hits like “Macho Man,” “In the Navy,” and “Go West.” Willis, who passed away at the age of 74, leaves behind a lasting legacy in the music industry.
