US President Donald Trump recently shared a photo of an Israeli strike on an Iranian oil depot, falsely implying it was a recent American attack on Iran. The image, depicting flames and smoke from the Shahran oil depot in Tehran on June 15, 2025, was misrepresented by Trump as part of the US’s latest strikes on Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed the strike was in response to Iran’s alleged bombing of ships the day before, warning of harsher actions if similar incidents recurred. However, the image shared was from a previous Israeli assault, leading to a correction by the news outlet.
Following tensions in the region, the US conducted new strikes on Iran after ships were targeted in the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway, crucial for global oil trade, has been a focal point in the conflict stemming from earlier US-Israeli attacks on Iranian sites.
Despite previous efforts to reach a peace agreement, a recent escalation has disrupted progress. An MoU signed on June 17 aimed to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz within 60 days, with Iran committing to restoring shipping levels and the US lifting its naval blockade.
Trump’s declaration of the end of the ceasefire during a NATO summit in Türkiye led to further US strikes on Iran, aimed at reducing their threat to navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The US Central Command confirmed these actions were in response to Trump’s orders to safeguard freedom of navigation in the region.
