A significant development has arisen in the case of two children who tragically perished in a car after being reportedly left unattended by their mother during the intense 40C heatwave in Europe.
The children, aged two and four, were discovered unconscious in the family vehicle parked in the garage of a detached residence in the Bois de l’Ubac neighborhood of Carpentras, France. Despite efforts by emergency responders to revive them, both children succumbed, leading to the initiation of a manslaughter inquiry. An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was dehydration, as disclosed by Hélène Mourges, the public prosecutor.
Initial findings from the Carpentras prosecutor’s office suggested that the likelihood of the deaths being linked to extreme heat exposure is plausible pending further investigations. The ongoing probe indicated that the children might have entered the car without their 33-year-old mother’s knowledge and subsequently got trapped inside.
The mother allegedly admitted to having “forgotten her children” while shopping, as per a police source cited by Le Parisien. A neighbor named Amandine expressed shock over the incident, emphasizing the close-knit nature of the community and how the children were always lively and playful.
Authorities were alerted to the situation at the grandmother’s property at 1:10 pm on Monday. Ms. Mourges reiterated that the prevailing theory points to the heatwave as contributing to the tragic outcome, noting that the children had reportedly locked themselves in the vehicle without their mother’s awareness.
