Late Tuesday night in Gaza City, a residential building housing multiple families collapsed, resulting in the tragic deaths of 19 individuals while they were asleep and leaving 25 others injured. The incident also led to a rescue operation to retrieve additional individuals who were believed to be inside the unstable structure. The building had been weakened by previous Israeli strikes during the ongoing conflict, highlighting the increasingly hazardous living conditions faced by the majority of Gaza’s residents amidst a stalled ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Reports from the Gaza Health Ministry indicated that among the casualties were at least 13 women and children, with the death toll anticipated to rise as more victims are recovered from the debris. The entire population of Gaza, numbering around two million, now resides in a limited area due to the destruction, relying heavily on aid and facing daily threats from Israeli military actions.
Since the ceasefire agreement, there has been no significant reconstruction work in Gaza, with Israel conditioning any rebuilding efforts on Hamas disarming. This has forced Palestinians to choose between overcrowded tent camps or inhabiting the few remaining damaged structures within the enclave.
Despite being aware of the building’s precarious state, six displaced Palestinian families had been residing in the collapsed structure as they felt they had no other viable options, according to Gaza’s civil defense. The aftermath of the collapse saw desperate searches for missing loved ones, with heart-wrenching scenes of people trying to identify survivors amidst the rubble.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began in October 2023 following a deadly raid by Hamas into Israel, has resulted in a significant loss of life on both sides.
