A woman, deeply saddened by the lack of safety measures at a beach where her childhood friend drowned years ago, has been advocating for lifeguards to be stationed there regularly. Following a recent incident where two men lost their lives while attempting a rescue, the leader of Hartlepool Borough Council has called for a review of water safety arrangements at the location.
The tragic event unfolded when Wayne Taylor entered the water to save his children, with Ian Pascoe, a courageous bystander, joining in the rescue attempt. While the children were rescued, both men tragically perished. Dan Pascoe, Ian Pascoe’s son, questioned why such heroic actions were necessary in common dangerous situations.
The Mirror initiated a national water safety campaign earlier this year after a spate of drowning incidents during a heatwave. The woman campaigning for lifeguards shared her personal experience of losing a friend to drowning and her ongoing efforts to push for better safety measures at the beach.
The recent fatalities at Seaton Carew beach have reignited calls for extended lifeguard coverage beyond the summer school holidays. Dan Pascoe expressed gratitude to the responders for their efforts and emphasized the need for increased awareness of sea dangers and additional safety measures like barriers, warning flags, and permanent lifeguard presence.
The Mirror’s Save Lives For Sam campaign aims to address the rising drowning crisis in the UK with proposals for mandatory water safety education, a national awareness drive, enhanced lifesaving equipment, the implementation of Sam’s Law, and the appointment of a dedicated Minister for Water Safety.
