A tornado was confirmed by Environment and Climate Change Canada to have occurred near a community in southwestern Manitoba on Sunday. The tornado was spotted near Elkhorn, Man., located 300 kilometers west of Winnipeg, around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, as reported by Environment Canada. The tornado sightings were reported through the RCMP and social media channels.
Environment Canada is working in conjunction with the Northern Tornadoes Project to conduct further investigations. Additional information will be shared after a preliminary assessment is completed. Storm damage was documented in Kola, a Manitoba community just south of Elkhorn, as mentioned by Environment Canada meteorologist Shannon Moodie to CBC News on Monday.
The Northern Tornadoes Project indicated that the tornado near Elkhorn may have originated near Kola, suggesting the possibility of either two tornadoes or a single one, with potential for more occurrences.
A farmer in the vicinity of Kola mentioned that their family would decide on Monday whether to rebuild, following significant damage to most of their structures, including a hay shed that was destroyed by the storm. Despite losing almost all buildings, the farmer’s house remained intact. The farmer expressed intentions to consult with their insurance company before convening a family meeting to plan the next steps.
The region has experienced a wet summer with substantial rainfall, with Kola receiving approximately 74 millimeters of rain on Sunday, while St-Lazare and Duck Mountain Provincial Park recorded 41 mm and 37.8 mm, respectively, as reported by Moodie.
Another tornado was verified near Maryfield, Sask., on Sunday afternoon. A potential tornado was also sighted near Kelso, Sask., but conclusive evidence is lacking at this point. Some parts of Manitoba can expect showers and non-severe, isolated thunderstorms on Monday, following the calming down of the significant weather system that triggered Sunday’s storms.
Residents shared their experiences post the damaging storm, with one individual recounting being forced off the highway into Elkhorn due to heavy rains. The aftermath of the storm in Elkhorn included ripped roofs and scattered debris, as observed by witnesses. Despite the destruction, there were no reported injuries, fostering a sense of community resilience and unity.
The impacted areas are now focused on recovery and rebuilding efforts to overcome the challenges posed by the severe weather events.
