Teen duped by catfisher in years-long deception

A teenager fell victim to identity theft by a serial catfisher who created fake profiles to deceive men into believing they were in a relationship with the 19-year-old girl. The incident involved Sasha-Jay Davies, a resident of Aberdare in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, whose photos were unlawfully used by Elha Mai Weston, a fellow teenager from the same town. Weston impersonated Sasha-Jay on various online platforms, including TikTok, Tinder, Hinge, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and SoundCloud, leading to a distressing four-year ordeal for the real Sasha-Jay.

Despite repeated attempts to stop the catfishing by alerting the authorities, the deception persisted, with Weston accumulating a substantial following under Sasha-Jay’s name between 2022 and 2026. The imposter engaged in romantic interactions with strangers online, causing significant emotional distress to Sasha-Jay, who was even approached in real life by individuals who thought they knew her through the fake accounts.

After seeking legal assistance, Sasha-Jay’s lawyers successfully traced Weston’s true identity and pursued legal action against her. Weston admitted her wrongdoing and issued a public apology, leading to a court settlement where she agreed to pay £10,000 in compensation to Sasha-Jay. The court proceedings revealed Weston’s extensive use of AI-generated images resembling Sasha-Jay and her persistent online deception.

Following the settlement, which included an agreement to refrain from repeating such actions, Sasha-Jay expressed relief and a sense of closure. Her lawyer emphasized the impact of catfishing on victims and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable through legal avenues. The case highlighted the repercussions of online impersonation and the potential legal consequences for individuals engaged in fraudulent activities on digital platforms.
