Child Undergoes Seventh Surgery After Crocodile Attack

The parents of a young child who was reportedly thrown into a crocodile enclosure have shared details about his extensive injuries and his recent seventh surgical procedure. The three-year-old remains in stable condition at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, a month after the terrifying incident where he was attacked by one or more of the large reptiles.

In an update on GoFundMe, the child’s parents disclosed, “Today our son underwent his seventh surgery, during which surgeons performed a nerve graft on his left arm. A nerve from his leg was used to replace a missing part in his left arm, aiming to improve function in his left hand over time. The success of the nerve graft will be assessed in a few months.”

The parents also recounted the challenging initial surgery their son endured, lasting 12 hours, which involved addressing tendon, nerve, blood vessel damage, broken bones, and severe tissue injuries in multiple areas of his body. They expressed the emotional turmoil of signing consent forms for resuscitation and potential amputation during that critical period.

The child, whose identity has not been disclosed, was rescued by the zoo’s owners and others who bravely intervened in the crocodile enclosure to save him. A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but was later released on bail due to his incapacity for interview. He reportedly has significant learning disabilities and was under supervision when the incident occurred on June 18 at Johnsons of Old Hurst near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

An online fundraiser has amassed over £68,000 to aid in the boy’s physical and psychological recovery. The parents expressed gratitude for the support received, sharing their relief at his progress and hopeful outlook. They mentioned the ongoing challenges ahead in terms of his physical and psychological rehabilitation and the adjustments they will make to support him during this period.

Additionally, Addenbrooke’s Hospital is under scrutiny for a security breach involving the child’s medical records, with reports of 40 staff members accessing the information. The hospital has initiated an internal investigation and informed the Information Commissioner’s Office to determine the legitimacy of the record access.
