A man who endured five challenging nights in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia is recounting his ordeal. Stanislav Volo triggered a large-scale search operation when he did not return from a hike after riding the Sea-to-Sky Gondola near Squamish. Search and rescue teams located him on Indian Arm Forest Service Road after he descended the mountain injured but on his own.
In an interview post-hospital discharge, the 43-year-old father shared his experience, noting his reliance on technology and its occasional failure. Volo had aimed to hike the Mount Habrich Loop, an area renowned for its technical and exposed alpine terrain. His phone died at the mountain’s peak, leaving him disoriented on the descent.
Panicking, Volo mistakenly followed pipeline construction noise, resulting in further injuries. He spent nights in a cave near a waterfall, surviving on rationed gummy bears and wildflowers. Despite multiple helicopter sightings, he was unnoticed, prompting his decision to descend the mountain.
Encountering a construction worker, Volo was linked with search and rescue teams. His sister expressed joy at his safe return, emphasizing his resilience. Volo’s survival amazed the search manager, reflecting on the challenging conditions endured during the search operation.
Now reunited with his family in Squamish, Volo expressed gratitude towards the search teams and emphasized the unpredictable nature of such incidents. His hope is that sharing his story will serve as a cautionary tale for others.
