A young man who was a participant in the Greek version of the popular reality TV show Survivor is taking legal action against the show’s producers following a tragic boating incident that resulted in the amputation of his leg. Stavros Floros, aged 22, lodged a lawsuit in a Florida court seeking $100 million in damages.
The incident occurred while Floros was part of Season 13 of Survivor Greece, where he was engaged in spearfishing off the coast of the Dominican Republic on May 11. According to court records obtained by CBC News, a tourist boat collided with Floros, leading to the severing of his left leg above the knee and causing severe injuries to his right leg. After the accident, Floros was transported to a local medical facility and then transferred to a hospital in Miami, where he underwent multiple surgeries and spent 61 days in recovery.
TMZ released graphic images of Floros post-accident, showcasing the severity of his injuries. Skai TV, the broadcaster of Survivor Greece, temporarily halted the show and expressed support for Floros, pledging to assist with his treatment and recovery. However, Floros claims that he did not receive adequate care and support from the production company.
In his statement to TheWrap after filing the lawsuit, Floros expressed his disappointment in the lack of support he received, stating, “I went onto a reality show and ended up with only one leg at 22 years old, having felt like I was slowly dying.”
The legal action, filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, names AcunMedya, AcunMedya Global, Acun LLC, Turkish businessman Acun Ilicali, and Skai TV’s parent company as defendants. The lawsuit alleges negligence on the part of the production team for failing to implement safety measures despite the known risks of high-speed boat traffic in the area.
Floros’s life-changing experience has sparked a legal battle, shedding light on the responsibilities of reality TV productions towards contestant safety. Despite the show’s popularity, Survivor Greece faces scrutiny over the handling of the boating incident that altered Floros’s life forever.
