“Stay Safe and Cool: Check Smoke Alarms Amid UK Heatwave”

Britons are being advised to verify the functionality of their smoke alarms to ensure they are operating correctly during the ongoing heatwave in the UK. As temperatures soar, there is an increased risk of electrical systems and appliances overheating, emphasizing the importance of conducting electrical safety checks, including ensuring smoke alarms are in proper working condition, especially in the summer to detect any issues proactively.

The recent alerts regarding smoke alarms coincide with the Met Office’s confirmation that May has set a new temperature record, with temperatures reaching unprecedented levels described as a “tropical night” in the UK. The record for the highest daily minimum temperature for the month was established overnight at Kenley Airfield, south London, where the temperature did not drop below 21.3C, officially categorizing the night as “tropical.”

In response to the hot weather, individuals across the UK are likely resorting to pedestal fans for temporary relief. However, Ian Palmer-Smith, an expert in appliance repair at Domestic & General, cautioned against leaving a fan running throughout the night due to the increased risk of electrical fires that may arise from potential equipment faults.

Licensed electrician David Miloshev supported Palmer-Smith’s advice, emphasizing the importance of turning off fans before bedtime to prevent electric fires and dust circulation. Miloshev also recommended ensuring that smoke alarm systems are functioning properly as an extra precautionary measure.

Beyond fire safety concerns, Dr. Kiran Dintyala highlighted other risks associated with running a fan all night during summer. Continuous airflow from fans can circulate dust and pollen, triggering severe reactions for allergy and asthma sufferers. Additionally, prolonged exposure to cool air can lead to room dryness, potentially causing dehydration, dry eyes, sinus infections, bronchitis, and nosebleeds. Dr. Dintyala also warned of the possibility of waking up with stiff, achy muscles due to extended exposure to cold air.

Supporting these points, Martin Seeley, CEO of Mattress Next Day and a sleep expert, echoed the advice to avoid using fans overnight, regardless of humidity levels. Symptoms like itchy eyes, a runny nose, and breathing difficulties upon waking may indicate that fan blades are dispersing accumulated dust. Staying hydrated is essential to combat dehydration caused by nighttime fan use, as dehydration worsens daytime fatigue.

Seeley further advised against directing a fan towards areas with pre-existing muscle pains, as this may exacerbate discomfort. It is crucial to prioritize proper ventilation and hydration during summer nights to ensure restful sleep and overall well-being.
