Romanian authorities have formally charged Andrew Tate, a social media influencer, with offenses including trafficking minors, money laundering, engaging in sexual activities with a minor, and tampering with witnesses. Additionally, his brother Tristan has been implicated in complicity in the crimes. The Tate siblings, who are former kickboxers holding dual U.S. and British citizenship, were apprehended in Miami in late July following a extradition request from the UK.
Residing predominantly in Romania since 2017, the brothers have been the subject of a criminal inquiry in the country since December 2022, primarily focusing on accusations of human trafficking. Despite the allegations leveled against them, they have consistently denied any wrongdoing. Romanian prosecutors assert that the Tates enticed their victims by feigning romantic interest or the promise of marriage, subsequently coercing them to create sexually explicit content for a webcam enterprise.
In response to the indictment, the Tate’s Romanian lawyer, Eugen Vidineac, stated that they would rigorously scrutinize every aspect of the case and challenge any procedural or legal inadequacies through the appropriate legal channels. The accused individuals maintain their innocence.
The Tate brothers are currently detained in the U.S. pending a decision on their extradition to the UK, where they are facing rape charges. The Romanian anti-organized crime prosecuting unit, DIICOT, which is overseeing the investigation into the Tates, has not confirmed whether they will seek the brothers’ extradition from the United States.
Although the Tates could potentially be tried in absentia in Romania, the trial proceedings will not commence immediately. The indictment will be reviewed by a preliminary court chamber judge to ensure its legal validity. While the law stipulates that the judge has 60 days to finalize the report, the process of indictments typically extends beyond this timeframe.
Andrew Tate, who has previously described himself as a misogynist, justified his move to Romania by citing the perceived leniency of law enforcement in the country. The brothers have cultivated a sizeable following, primarily among young men, by projecting an extravagant, hyper-masculine persona characterized by fast cars and relationships with attractive women.
