Earlier this summer, Jasmin Esquivel traveled from Saskatchewan to British Columbia, not knowing that her life was on the brink of change. In a matter of days, Esquivel was named Mrs. Canada Universe 2026 at the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey, B.C.
Expressing her surprise, Esquivel shared with CBC Saskatchewan, “I didn’t anticipate this, especially after many years and having five children. It’s a realization that one day your aspirations will come to fruition.” Competing in her last pageant at 17, Esquivel, now 43, felt a resurgence of passion when the opportunity arose to participate in this contest.
Residing in Prince Albert, Sask., with her children, Esquivel acknowledged their unwavering support and inspiration throughout her journey, despite her initial hesitations about entering the competition. Her eldest daughter, Brianna Balajonda, remarked, “We were initially taken aback, but witnessing her dedication and training truly amazed and motivated us.”
Esquivel attributed her current status as Mrs. Canada Universe to her children, emphasizing their role as her driving force and constant companions behind the scenes of the pageant. Engaging in community service became a significant aspect of the preparation process for Esquivel and her family, involving volunteering at care homes, sports events, and organizing local fun runs.
Her ultimate goal is to encourage women and mothers to pursue their dreams, affirming, “There’s always an opportune moment for you. After attaining this crown and title, it dawned on me that one can persist in chasing their dreams even while raising children.”
Balajonda expressed gratitude for being by her mother’s side throughout the journey, highlighting Esquivel’s ability to inspire women to follow their aspirations regardless of their maternal responsibilities. Esquivel is set to represent Canada and her hometown at Mrs. Universe 2026 in Sri Lanka this October, a prospect eagerly anticipated by her children, who expressed their unwavering support and love for her.
