“Google Maps Renames ‘Lake America’ Sparks U.S.-Canada Tensions”

Google Maps has recently made a revision to its platform by showcasing “Lake America” for searches originating from the United States. Conversely, individuals in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario unless they specifically search for Lake America. This alteration was implemented following the U.S. government’s official update to the geographic names database, formalizing the change in the lake’s name.

In response to the decision, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Thursday to designate the body of water as Lake America. This action swiftly followed the breakdown of trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa, prompting Canada to announce retaliatory tariffs.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney firmly stated that Canadians will persist in referring to the body of water as Lake Ontario “now and always.” This statement comes amidst escalating tensions between the two nations.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford recently unveiled a new sign for “Lake Ontario” in Winona, a lakeside community near Hamilton, in response to the renaming. The unveiling occurred shortly after President Trump’s executive order to rename the body of water.
