Contrary to Sainsbury’s decision, Morrisons and Waitrose have confirmed their intention to continue stocking brown eggs, emphasizing the importance of providing customers with choices. A Waitrose spokesperson highlighted that the retailer aims to uphold high welfare standards and reduce environmental impact simultaneously. Similarly, Morrisons pledged to maintain brown eggs in its own-brand selection to cater to customers’ preferences for egg color, stating that shoppers are increasingly seeking sustainable shopping options.

Sainsbury’s rationale behind the switch to white eggs is part of its strategy to reach net-zero emissions by 2035. The supermarket explained that white eggs are sourced from white-feathered hens with longer laying lives and lower feed requirements, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of egg production. Research conducted by SAC Consulting revealed that white eggs have a 12.7% lower carbon footprint compared to brown eggs.

The supermarket chain aims to achieve net-zero emissions within its operations by 2035 and across its entire supply chain by 2050. A spokesperson from Sainsbury’s emphasized that white eggs offer the same taste and nutritional benefits as brown eggs while contributing to lower carbon emissions and enhanced welfare for the laying hens.

Similarly, a Waitrose representative reiterated the company’s commitment to animal welfare and quality, advocating for British eggs from trusted, high-welfare farms. Waitrose is also on track to achieve net-zero emissions across its UK farms by 2035, demonstrating the possibility of maintaining high welfare standards while reducing environmental impact.
