“Promoting Online Safety: Families Navigate AI Challenges”

AI’s influence on our lives is expanding rapidly, presenting challenges for parents trying to keep up. Families are increasingly guiding their children through a digital landscape saturated with AI, impacting everything from social media to schoolwork and relationships, as underscored during the recent Safer Internet Day.

Amid the difficulty of discerning reality online, the emphasis is on ensuring children’s safety. In 2026, we have teamed up with Tesco Mobile, a key sponsor of Safer Internet Day, to promote open dialogues within families through The Family Chat initiative. The aim is to facilitate candid discussions at home about online safety, alleviating the sense of overwhelm.

Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys aged seven, nine, and 11, along with her husband Tom, will engage with parents and children to address the challenges they face. The initial conversation centers on AI and the invaluable support provided by Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub for parents with children up to 18 years old.

The Karley family, comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua, 13, Isaac, 14, and Ruby, 17, like many households, rely on devices for connectivity. However, the parents admit their struggles in understanding AI, posing potential safety risks.

Anna acknowledges her difficulty in identifying AI, recounting instances where her children pointed out its presence. The challenge extends to detecting fake content, particularly on platforms like TikTok, as highlighted by Joshua.

With homework increasingly shifting online, driven by AI-generated research, both the Karleys and Giovanna are grappling with this trend. Giovanna notes the prevalence of computer-based assignments for her eldest in secondary school, emphasizing the need for continuous assessment of AI usage rather than demonizing its role in education.

To ensure children’s safe interaction with AI, families can follow these guidelines:
1. Explore AI collaboratively to enhance safety and enjoyment.
2. Encourage fact-checking and critical thinking as AI can err.
3. Verify age restrictions and privacy settings on AI platforms.
4. Educate children on discerning reality online amidst deepfakes and misinformation.
5. Promote AI as a supportive tool, not a substitute for creativity and problem-solving.

The Karleys appreciate having a reliable resource like Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub for guidance. The hub offers practical resources and toolkits for parents to engage their children in discussions about AI safely, featuring age-appropriate advice in partnership with the UK Safer Internet Centre.

The Karley family, already proactive in discussing online safety, finds the Online Safety Hub enhances their efforts, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Emmanuel expresses their gratitude for the platform, enabling them to bolster their support for their children effectively.
