A woman prison officer has been sentenced to jail for engaging in a sexual act with an inmate, which was recorded on her body-worn camera. Rebecca Pinckard, 46, had the encounter with Erion Nakdi, 42, a prisoner at HMP Highpoint in Suffolk. Pinckard, a mother from Cambridgeshire, had previously sent a card to Nakdi, who is serving a 16-year sentence for drug offenses. She pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office and was sentenced to 32 weeks in jail.
During the court hearing at Cambridge Crown Court, it was revealed that Pinckard was caught on camera performing a sexual act on Nakdi on July 5, 2024. The footage was discovered by another officer reviewing the body-worn camera recordings. Judge Anthony Cartin emphasized that Pinckard’s actions were only exposed due to a mistake and that the offense had been ongoing for several months. The judge highlighted that Pinckard’s behavior eroded public confidence in the criminal justice system.
In addition to the prison officer’s misconduct, it was revealed that she had sent Nakdi a Moonpig card in April 2024. Prosecutors also found explicit videos of Nakdi on Pinckard’s phone, confirming that the videos were recorded in prison and then shared via social media messaging. Nakdi, appearing in court via video link from prison, admitted to possessing an unauthorized mobile phone in prison, resulting in an additional 10-month sentence on top of his existing 16-year and three-month term for drug-related charges.
Legal representatives for Nakdi described the relationship between him and Pinckard as an emotional connection, with the Moonpig card being characterized as a gesture of affection. Pinckard’s defense attorney portrayed her actions as a momentary lapse driven by personal difficulties, emphasizing that it was not a sustained relationship. The court was informed that Pinckard had previously received a warning for being overly familiar with prisoners and had tried to improve their lives by giving them cakes and sweets.
Throughout the sentencing, Pinckard displayed emotions, wiping away tears as she was led to the cells. The case underscores the serious repercussions of inappropriate relationships between prison staff and inmates, raising concerns about the integrity of the criminal justice system.
