The principal of a school in Happy Valley-Goose Bay has stepped down due to a lack of staff, prompting parents to gather at the school to express their support and criticize government officials. Ashley Barrett, the principal of Peacock Primary School, which has an enrollment of approximately 324 students, informed parents via email about her resignation. Barrett mentioned that the shortage of staff and the growing demands of the education system hindered her ability to prioritize student safety, well-being, and education quality. Her resignation was effective on Thursday, October 1.
Peacock Primary School currently has seven unfilled positions out of a total of 27 teaching positions. These vacancies include three classroom teacher positions, two instructional resource teacher roles, and one guidance counselor. Superintendent Terry Hall of NLSchools addressed the staffing challenges in a letter to parents, mentioning efforts to recruit teachers to Labrador.
Approximately 50 parents gathered at the school in support of Barrett, leading to the closure of the school for the day as 20 teachers called in sick. Concerned parent Shauna Bartlett questioned why the school had reached this point and criticized officials for jeopardizing children’s education. Bartlett highlighted Barrett’s efforts to address staffing concerns, emphasizing the importance of proper staffing for quality education access.
Dale Lambe, the president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association, expressed concerns over the safety risks posed by staffing shortages at schools. He emphasized the need for adequate programming and efforts to address the teacher shortages in Labrador. Lambe predicted a rise in student population, calling for increased recruitment and retention of teachers in the region.
Education Minister Paul Dinn expressed surprise at Barrett’s resignation and assured that all teaching positions would be covered to resume classes. Dinn outlined strategies including hiring bonuses, remote allowances, and travel costs to address the staffing challenges. He emphasized the government’s commitment to creating safe and supportive learning environments for students.
