Prince William commemorated the third anniversary of his ambitious initiative to combat homelessness by unveiling over £7 million in fresh funding. The project, dubbed Homewards, aims to tackle the root causes of homelessness and elevate its impact to new levels. Notably, in the past year alone, Homewards directed £1.9 million into six locations in the UK, supplementing this with an additional £3.5 million secured through grants and private donations.
A significant portion of the new funding, totaling £7.7 million, will be allocated to various partnerships, including a £2.3 million collaboration with organizations like The Multibank, DfS, Bosch Home Appliances, IKEA, and B&Q. This initiative aims to assist individuals in establishing and maintaining tenancies to prevent homelessness.
Moreover, the contributions complement a generous £50 million donation made by Lloyds Bank last year to facilitate new lending opportunities for organizations dedicated to housing provision. At a forthcoming special event, Prince William plans to encourage Homewards to expand its reach, emphasizing the importance of scalability across the country.
Prince William, aged 44, introduced the Homewards initiative as a five-year endeavor to develop a comprehensive strategy to eradicate homelessness. The upcoming phase will concentrate on amplifying successful interventions and creating a replicable model adaptable nationwide and internationally.
The overarching goal is to transition more individuals into stable housing and employment promptly, demonstrating the potential to make homelessness infrequent, brief, and non-recurring. Since its inception, Homewards has impacted over 2,400 individuals through educational and community initiatives, assisted over 250 individuals in finding jobs, and facilitated more than 73 families in securing stable residences to avert potential homelessness.
This cause holds personal significance for Prince William, who recalls how childhood visits to shelters with his mother, the late Princess Diana, profoundly influenced his commitment to this cause. Through pilot programs in six strategic locations, Homewards has successfully transitioned individuals into sustainable living situations, employment, and established collaborative frameworks for shared responsibility and early risk detection.
The initiative also aims to attract sustained funding to ensure the continuity of prevention strategies post the five-year program duration. During a prestigious event in London, Prince William stressed that homelessness is not solely an individual issue but a systemic one, emphasizing the role of systemic solutions in prevention efforts.
Dr. Peter Mackie, Executive Director of the Institute of Global Homelessness and a Homewards National Expert Panel member, highlighted the program’s alignment with a global trend towards preventing homelessness through coordinated systemic actions. The early outcomes underscore the potential for risk reduction and early interventions through a data-driven, cross-sector approach.
Hazel Destiny, Executive Director of Homelessness at The Royal Foundation, expressed optimism about Homewards’ progress in testing large-scale homelessness prevention strategies. She emphasized the need for continued innovation and scaling up successful prevention measures to effect substantial and sustainable change in the long term.
Prince William’s extensive involvement in Homewards has seen him visit all six project locations over the past three years, underscoring his commitment to the initiative’s objectives. Notable supporters of the campaign include former Lioness Fara Williams, TV presenter Gail Porter, Aston Villa footballer Tyrone Mings, Spice Girl Geri Horner, Opera star Sir Bryn Terfel, and broadcaster Sara Cox.
