Police on High Alert as Pubs Granted 5am Opening for World Cup

Police authorities are bracing for potential disturbances following an eleventh-hour government directive allowing pubs to remain open until 5am for England’s upcoming World Cup match. Andy Trotter, a former deputy assistant commissioner at the Metropolitan Police, expressed concerns about the combination of warm evenings, alcohol consumption, and sports events leading to disorder. He emphasized the additional strain on police resources due to the sudden change in licensing hours for the match, necessitating increased officer presence nationwide.

Trotter highlighted the need for law enforcement readiness amid the late-night influx of people, anticipating possible conflicts with early commuters. The abrupt shift in operational schedules poses challenges for police forces, necessitating swift adjustments. The match against Mexico is scheduled to start at 1am local time on Monday, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirming the decision to extend pub hours, ensuring fans’ convenience and safety.

While closing times had been extended to 2am for earlier matches, individual pubs missed the deadline to request extended hours for the upcoming fixture. Emma McClarkin, CEO of the British Beer and Pub Association, lauded the decision, noting the enthusiasm among pubs and fans for the extended hours. Data from the football policing unit revealed a surge in football-related incidents during the World Cup, with concerns raised by Mark Roberts, head of the UK’s football policing unit, regarding the impact of prolonged pub hours on policing responsibilities.

Roberts cautioned against the broad extension of pub opening hours during the tournament, citing potential challenges. Notably, this marks the first time in ten years that licensing hours have been relaxed for the round of 32 and 16, raising concerns about increased policing demands. As of the latest report, a significant number of incidents have been recorded in licensed premises and domestic settings, underscoring the need for vigilance and preparedness in managing potential disturbances during the World Cup matches.
