“Pension Savers Urged to Check for Tax Refunds”

Thousands of individuals with pension savings are being advised to verify if they are eligible for a tax refund from HMRC. Recent statistics reveal that over £50 million was recovered in tax on pension withdrawals made between April and June 2026, with more than 12,500 claims processed during this timeframe, resulting in an average reimbursement of £4,000 per claimant.

If you were subject to emergency tax following your initial pension withdrawal, you might be entitled to a refund. This situation can occur if HMRC assumes that your first withdrawal will be a monthly occurrence, even if you do not make any further withdrawals in that tax year.

Typically, individuals can withdraw up to 25% of their pension tax-free from the age of 55, with the remaining 75% subject to their standard income tax rate. Adam Cole, a retirement expert at Quilter, emphasized the significance of the average repayment, highlighting that this money could be utilized more effectively and promptly.

Instead of waiting for HMRC to issue a refund, individuals can reclaim the excess amount paid in emergency tax by completing an online form. Alternatively, they can opt to receive the refund at the end of the tax year. Mr. Cole emphasized the importance of strategic planning and professional guidance to avoid overpaying tax during the withdrawal process.
