Parents Arrested as Search Effort Tragically Shifts to Homicide Inquiry

A young girl involved in a significant search effort in South Carolina is now believed to have passed away, following the arrest of her parents in connection with her demise.

Javeayah Harris, aged four, was reported missing, prompting an extensive search operation that involved helicopters, drones, police canines, and a large number of law enforcement officers.

Authorities in Aiken County have disclosed that they suspect the child had already died approximately a month before the missing person report was filed. The search for Javeayah has transitioned from a rescue mission to a homicide inquiry, although her body has not been discovered yet.

The father, Johmarea Harris, 23, faces charges of homicide by child abuse, while the mother, Michilae Herring, 22, has been charged with the same offense as well as filing a false police report. Both individuals are currently in custody as the investigation into the whereabouts of their daughter’s body progresses.

Law enforcement officials have revealed that evidence obtained during the probe led detectives to believe that Javeayah was deceased at the time the emergency call reporting her disappearance was made on June 30. Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer Jr. expressed regret, stating, “Sadly, it was already too late to save her the moment the 911 call came in.”

Efforts are ongoing to locate the four-year-old’s remains beyond Aiken County. Initial search and rescue operations spanned over 3,000 acres, utilizing helicopters, drones, K-9 units, and numerous law enforcement personnel.

According to court documents, both parents purportedly acknowledged the child’s death, although her body has not been found. Further charges may be brought as the investigation unfolds.

Heartbroken locals have paid tribute to the young girl by leaving an array of flowers, teddy bears, and balloons outside the family’s residence. Community members, including hundreds of volunteers, actively participated in the search for the child when she was reported missing, with one resident remarking, “She captured our hearts.”

Previously, authorities described Javeayah as a lively and expressive child who adored Minnie Mouse and chasing after chickens.

Sheriff Sawyer expressed gratitude towards the agencies and volunteers involved in the search efforts and extended condolences to Javeayah’s relatives. Despite the somber turn of events, he affirmed that the search for her will persist until she is found.

He emphasized, “Our search for Javeayah continues. It remains crucial that we bring her home.”
