Katherine Hopkins, a former tattoo artist, spent consecutive days swimming at Hove Lawns in Brighton and Lancing Beach in West Sussex. Despite not submerging her head, she splashed seawater on her face during her extended swimming sessions, leading to severe stomach cramps and frequent trips to the toilet.
Hospitalized for a month, Katherine was diagnosed with cryptosporidium, a tiny parasite causing intestinal illness. Having undergone a kidney transplant previously, she suspects swallowing seawater during her beach activities as the source of the parasite. After being discharged from the hospital, Katherine, who continues to experience symptoms, emphasizes the potential risks of swimming in contaminated seawater.
Recently, Southern Water faced a £7.1 million fine for illegal sewage pollution incidents affecting Kent’s beaches due to operational failures. The company’s history of environmental violations includes a previous £90 million fine for sewage discharges across multiple regions.
