Former Store Worker Turned Braves Reliever Strikes Out Ohtani

Ray Kerr, a former convenience store and movie theater worker, emerged as an unexpected hero for the Atlanta Braves in the playoffs. The left-handed reliever delivered a stellar performance by striking out four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani with a 95-mph four-seam fastball in the Braves’ 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, leveling the National League Division Series at one game apiece.

Braves manager Walt Weiss commended Kerr’s exceptional performance, stating, “He did it again for us, just amazing. He’s throwing the ball so well.” Kerr, aged 32, was informed on the morning of the game that he would start Game 2. Despite the short notice, he showcased his talents by striking out Ohtani and three other players, allowing only two hits and one walk in 2 2/3 innings.

Reflecting on his journey, Kerr revealed that he faced challenges in his early life, entering the foster care system at 13 due to family circumstances. After working at a convenience store and a theater, Kerr was encouraged by a coach at Lassen College to return to baseball. He eventually signed with the Seattle Mariners as an undrafted free agent, later moving to the San Diego Padres before joining the Braves.

Kerr’s perseverance paid off as he made his Major League debut in 2022, and despite setbacks like Tommy John surgery, he returned stronger this season. His impressive stats include a 1.47 ERA over 18 1/3 innings, with left-handed hitters like Ohtani struggling against him.

The Braves are now heading back to Atlanta for Game 3, with ace Chris Sale set to take the mound. Meanwhile, in another game, the Milwaukee Brewers secured a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres, extending their lead in the NL Division Series to 2-0. Jackson Chourio, who delivered the game-winning hit, credited his success to learning from past mistakes and stepping up in crucial moments.

San Diego will look to bounce back in Game 3 after suffering consecutive losses, ending their dominant streak leading up to the playoffs.
